Music festival in Beijing creates a global melody

The China Conservatory of Music successfully hosted the 2024 Traditional Music Festival from Dec 4 to Dec 8 in Beijing with the theme "Civilization Exchange and Shared Beauty". The event aimed to showcase the diversity of traditional music and create a platform for cross-cultural dialogue through music featuring a series of performances and workshops. The festival brought together representative music ensembles from seven countries to create a cultural feast transcending borders.

One of the highlights was a world music concert held on Dec 5 at the China Conservatory of Music. The concert offered a breathtaking journey through world music, opening with a performance by the Speaking in Tongues World Music Group from the United States, who presented Silk Road. This composition seamlessly blended Eastern mystique and Western innovation using rich melodies and various instruments to demonstrate the harmonious fusion of cultures.

Following that, the performance of Silent Forest, Gurgling Streams invited the audience into a tranquil, immersive world with its serene melodies, evoking images of lush forests and flowing springs.

Zanzibar Traditional Music Group from Tanzania brought African flair to the concert, beginning with the passionate love song Come, My Beloved, which intertwined rhythmic drumbeats and melodies to express the African people's pursuit of love. I Hope, another piece from this ensemble, offered a simple yet rhythmic melody, encapsulating the optimistic outlook of African life.

Next, the Fado ensemble from Portugal enchanted the audience with deep, soulful songs. The melancholic Tangled in Love resonated with the complexities of love, while If You Ask reflected on lost relationships with poignant nostalgia. Through these performances, the Fado ensemble expressed Portugal's rich emotional landscape and historical depth.

The Sifa Nagme Mukam Ensemble from Turkiye captivated the audience through its musical traditions. Their performance of My True Heart Is Not Sweet Words conveyed deep emotional sincerity with its moving melodies. The Beautiful Image Forever Imprinted in My Heart evoked romance and nostalgia, while The Rose Captured My Heart Again was a tribute to the pure soul of a beautiful woman.

From Spain, the Barcelona Guitar Trio amazed with their virtuosity and passionate performance. Their piece Spain celebrates Spanish culture, filled with vibrant guitar tones and lively rhythms.

The final ensemble, the Osipov Soloists Quintet from Russia, concluded the concert with a performance that beautifully captured the essence of Russian music. The Lonely Shepherd conveyed a sense of solitude and longing through its soft melodies. Czardas was a lively dance piece that showcased the vibrancy and exuberance of Russian folk music. Their performance of The Story of Russian Land blended symphonic textures with folk melodies, celebrating Russia's rich historical and cultural legacy.

The evening culminated in a spectacular joint performance of Youth Dance Song, a piece originally from China arranged by Jin Ye, director of the conducting department at the China Conservatory of Music.

In addition to the concert, the festival also featured a series of workshops from Dec 3 to Dec 4. These workshops, held in collaboration with the China Conservatory's departments, including orchestral studies, musicology and composition, brought together over 30 musicians from seven countries to engage with students and faculty. Through its concerts and workshops, the festival showcased the beauty of traditional music and fostered deeper cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
