Sun Yeli, the spokesman for the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China held a news conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Saturday afternoon. Here are some highlights:

New CPC leadership to meet press

Members of the new Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the 20th CPC Central Committee will meet Chinese and foreign journalists after the conclusion of the first plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, Sun said.

The 20th CPC Central Committee will hold its first plenary session after the 20th CPC National Congress is closed, Sun said. (Read more)

Agenda set for the congress

The congress will open at 10 am on Sunday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, and conclude on Oct 22, Sun said.

Delegates will hear and examine a report submitted by the 19th CPC Central Committee, examine a work report of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, and deliberate and adopt an amendment to the Party's Constitution, he said.

The delegates will also elect the Party's 20th Central Committee and its 20th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, he said. (Read more)

Qualifications of 2,296 delegates approved

Qualifications of 2,296 delegates to the congress have been confirmed valid, Sun said.

The delegates will attend the 20th CPC National Congress, representing more than 96 million CPC members and over 4.9 million primary-level Party organizations, spokesperson Sun said. (Read more)

Opinions of more than 4,700 people were collected on a draft report of the 19th CPC Central Committee to the 20th CPC National Congress, Sun said. (Read more)

Fundamentals of Chinese economy remain unchanged

China's economy is still highly resilient and has great potential and vitality, and the economic fundamentals that will sustain long-term growth remain unchanged, Sun said.

China will continue to be a popular destination for investment, he said. (Read more)

The past decade has witnessed more than 2,000 reform programs introduced in multiple areas that cover people's basic living standards, education, health and eldercare, Sun said. (Read more)

Self-reform key to CPC's long-term governance

The spirit of self-reform has been key for the Communist Party of China to stay pure and vigorous, Sun said.

The same question was brought to the CPC over 70 years ago. At that time, Chairman Mao Zedong's answer was to let the people supervise the government. Now, based on the Party's continuous struggles, especially the experience in the new era, General Secretary Xi Jinping has offered the second answer: the Party’s self-reform. (Read more)

Major achievements reflected in moderately prosperous society

The moderately prosperous society that China has built features high-quality achievements, Sun said.

China's GDP had reached 101.6 trillion yuan ($14.1 trillion) by 2020, he said.

China's per capita GDP has surpassed $10,000 and more than 400 million Chinese have joined middle-income groups, he added. (Read more)

National reunification by peaceful means is the first choice of the CPC and the Chinese government in resolving the Taiwan question, as it best serves the interests of the Chinese nation as a whole, including our compatriots in Taiwan, and it works best for the long-term stability and development of China, Sun said.
