On Wuhan University's 128th anniversary on Tuesday, Charlie Huang made a donation of $40 million to his alma mater through his private philanthropic foundation. It was the largest personal donation the university has received to date.

Huang enrolled at the university in 1982, earning a bachelor's degree in economics in 1986. He is the founder and chairman of Pasaca Capital Inc and Innova Medical Group, Inc. He said donating to his alma mater has been a longtime dream.

"Education is a great cause that drives human progress and should receive selfless support. Entering Wuhan University was a very important starting point in my life. I am convinced that all my personal achievements could not have been realized without the education of my alma mater," he said.

"The donation to my alma mater is only a beginning of my philanthropic career, and more donations will be made in the future in the direction of education and medicine."

Huang's donation supports the future development of Wuhan University, said Dou Xiankang, the university's president. "I am proud that Wuhan University has produced alumni with a global perspective like Charlie Huang, and I sincerely appreciate him and the Charlie Huang Foundation for their generous donation."

The money will help the university improve campus conditions, cultivate top innovative talent and enhance research and innovation capabilities as the institution seeks to develop into a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

The donation was formally made at a virtual signing ceremony linking the Wuhan University campus in China with the foundation's headquarters in Pasadena, California, in the United States.
