The South-to-North Water Diversion Project has transferred more than 2 billion cubic meters of water to Zhengzhou, Henan province, primary school students learned on Monday, which was World Water Day.

"South water" has become the main supply for Zhengzhou, covering 90 percent of the city's population.

More than 900 students from Binhe Garden Experimental Primary School in Zhengzhou's Erqi district learned about water from project staff members at the middle route management office through models, chemical experiments and drone flights.

The project is the world's largest inter-basin water diversion network. The middle route measures 1,432 kilometers starting from Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei province. It runs across Henan and Hebei provinces before reaching Beijing and Tianjin. It began supplying water in late 2014.
