As of the end of April, East China's Anhui province has eliminated 1,267 mafia-style gangs and heard 594 cases associated with these gangs as the province has stepped up its crackdown on gang crimes starting in January 2018, according to a press conference held by provincial authorities on Tuesday.

Since January last year, local police seized cash and related assets with a total value of 2.47 billion yuan ($365.6 million).

A total of 1,253 officials with links to mafia-style gangs and who provided "protective umbrellas" received Party disciplinary or administrative penalties, 122 of which were transferred to judicial authorities for suspected criminal activity.

In April, 137 criminal gangs were removed when the central authorities sent a team to Anhui for a month-long inspection to oversee operations against gang-related crimes.
